The Future of Air Cargo Infrastructure: How ANC is Preparing for the Next Era of Global Trade

By Rosita Johnson

Revolutionizing Warehouse Operations: The Power of Rewarehousing

Air cargo has become more critical than ever, with businesses relying on fast, efficient shipping to keep goods moving across the globe. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), already one of the busiest air cargo hubs in the world, is preparing for the future by investing in new infrastructure to handle growing demand. These updates will ensure ANC continues to play a key role in global trade for years to come.

Anchorage’s Role in Global Cargo

Anchorage’s unique location between Asia, North America, and Europe makes it an ideal stop for air cargo carriers. Planes often refuel and transfer goods here before heading to their next destination. Whether it's electronics from China headed to the U.S. or fresh seafood flying to Europe, ANC is a crucial part of the global logistics network.

However, it’s not enough to rely on location alone. With the air cargo industry growing rapidly, ANC needs modern infrastructure to keep up with demand. That’s why the airport is making major investments to expand and improve its cargo handling capacity.

Recent Key Improvements

ANC’s investments focus on three major areas that are essential for keeping up with the demands of modern air freight:

  • Expanded Warehousing: The Alaska Cargo and Cold Storage facility at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is part of a significant infrastructure upgrade to handle increasing air cargo volumes. This state-of-the-art warehouse, located near the North Terminal, spans over 700,000 square feet and is equipped with advanced refrigeration and cargo-handling technologies. The facility is designed to streamline the storage and movement of perishable and non-perishable goods, enhancing both efficiency and capacity. This project is expected to play a key role in boosting Alaska's logistics and perishable goods exports

  • More Ramp Space: NorthLink Aviation is significantly expanding the cargo handling capacity at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) through the development of a new 120-acre air cargo terminal on the airport’s South Campus. This facility will feature 11 power-through hardstands and 4 push-back hardstands, which will allow cargo aircraft to park, refuel, and load simultaneously without the need for ground tugs. This streamlines operations and minimizes time on the ground, helping carriers maximize efficiency and increase throughput.

  • New Cargo Carriers: Recently, ANC made headlines with the arrival of five new cargo carriers, further boosting its reputation as a global air cargo hub. According to a press release from ANC, these new operators include Awesome Cargo Airlines, Central Airlines of China, ASL Air Cargo, Aerologic Air Cargo, and CMA CGM Air Cargo. Each airline brings new routes connecting key markets across Asia, North America, and Europe, reinforcing ANC’s strategic role in international trade.

These new carriers, operating aircraft like the Airbus A330-200F and Boeing 777 freighters, represent a significant step in ANC’s growth, with a 4.9% increase in cargo activity from FY23 to FY24 and an additional 2% growth projected for FY25. These numbers highlight the rising importance of Anchorage as a critical transit point for global air cargo, especially for goods traveling between Asia and North America. The press release also emphasized ANC’s commitment to modernizing its facilities, ensuring that it remains a leader in the world of logistics.

Why These Upgrades Matter

As more people shop online and businesses need faster shipping, the demand for air cargo continues to rise. Anchorage’s location and new infrastructure upgrades position it perfectly to handle this growing demand. The airport is preparing for the future by expanding its facilities and ensuring it has the technology needed to keep things moving efficiently.

With five new cargo airlines recently starting operations, ANC’s infrastructure upgrades come at just the right time. The additional warehousing, ramp space, and cargo systems will allow ANC to accommodate the increased traffic and ensure it continues to meet the needs of the global supply chain

Conclusion

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is making significant investments in its cargo infrastructure to meet the demands of modern air freight. By expanding warehousing, adding ramp space, and upgrading cargo handling systems, ANC is positioning itself for long-term success in the global logistics industry. These improvements, alongside the addition of new cargo carriers, show that ANC is ready to handle the future of global trade.

As air cargo grows, ANC’s forward-thinking approach ensures it will remain one of the world’s top cargo hubs, supporting businesses and consumers around the globe.
